Estee Lauder Private Collection: Jasmine White Moss Eau du Parfum

Jasmine-White-Moss-EDP.jpgJamie tried it: Given that so many other reviews have all but deified this last installation of the Private Collection, I had high expectations for this brash and creamy floral. It's a bit of a curveball fragrance for me - I thought I knew what I was getting into at the start ("green floral chypre") but instead it seemed, to my nose, dusty and old-fashioned. The top notes reminded me strongly of something a grandmother would wear - and not in the classy, memorable way. Once the initial burst died down, it turned into a sweeter, fresher floral with just the right amount of jasmine coming to the forefront. The base notes of vetiver and a distinctively mossy smell (the "white moss mist" ingredient is proprietary to Estee Lauder) finished off warmly without being overly sweet. I was so thrilled not to be hit over the head with the lilies and jasmine that this just scored a slot in my summer rotation. Despite the initial granny opening notes, this robust floral is otherwise stunning.

Notes: Fresh/Sparkling - Black Currant, Galbanum, Bergamot, Elegant/Complex: Jasmine Sambac, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Violet, Orange Flower, Orris, Warm/Modern: Patchouli, Vetiver, White Moss Mist

$80 (1 oz.), $135 (2.5 oz.) - available at Estee Lauder's website and associated retailers

We Review: Kat Von D Saint Rollerball Eau de Parfum

saintroller3.jpgMelissa Tried It: I admit, I'm a Kat Von D fan. I watch L.A. Ink and think she's a mighty badass example of a creative woman who has taken charge of her business and turned her passion into a living. That's why I was drawn to check out her Saint & Sinner fragrances on a recent trip to Sephora. By far, I found I preferred Saint. If you lean toward sweeter/luscious scents like myself, this one is yummy with a touch of floral sophistication. I purchased the rollerball version, thinking the deliciously-layered combination would be a perfect "comfort day" scent. And in all respects but one, it is.

HOWEVER.

There is an unfortunate lack of staying power here...consistently fading away after 4 hours or so, and even before then it begins hiding right up against your skin so closely that you have to put your nose right on it to really enjoy it. Disappointing. True, you don't want a fragrance to announce your presence before you enter a room, but I for one at least expect it to be something I can enjoy without walking around with my wrist in my face. Sadly, I noticed people have also expressed this same problem with the Eau de Parfum spray bottle, which makes me even more glad I only spent $16 versus $59. If they can increase the longevity of this scent it could be a winner; until then if you like it prepare to reapply liberally. $16, Sephora.

Scent Description: "The sweet nectar of Mirabelle Plum and sparkling juicy mandarin create an addictive, mouth-watering top. At the heart, exotic, heady Tiare flower and sweet, tempting caramel are adorned with the velvety floralcy of jasmine, the queen of the night, as she emits her spellbinding fragrance into the sky. Sensual vanilla and creamy musk combine with the warmth of sandalwood for a comforting dry down."

*As you know, DeLush does not give a lip rating to fragrances because of the objective nature of scent, but we'll explain our own experience of the fragrance to you!

We Review: CHANEL Chance Moisturizing Body Cream and Shower Gel

chanel_chancecream.jpgJen Tried It: I'm not sure why, but I don't have any CHANEL fragrances in my collection. It's especially surprising to me now, after testing this body cream and shower gel, both of which I LOVE. chanel_chanceshower.jpgThe body cream is perfect in every way: a small amount is plenty to moisturize my legs throughout the day. It seeps in just enough to do the trick without being greasy, but at the same time, the dreamy fragrance remains noticeable throughout the day. The scent of the shower gel doesn't linger quite as long, but makes for a lovely shower before special events or a big day at work. These are certainly a splurge in today's economic conditions, but would make an excellent gift for Mother's Day...or just a special treat for yourself. Body Cream, $75.00. Shower Gel, $47.50. Department Stores or Chanel.com.

We Review: Estée Lauder Sensuous Eau de Parfum Spray

estsens2.jpgMelissa Tried It: This scent seemed right up my alley..."A rich core of Molten Woods and Amber, surrounded by atmospheric florals, warmed by a hint of Pepper and a touch of Honey." It's long-lasting, and wears a bit more like a musk than a perfume (though it is not a musk). I guess what I mean is it's deep right from the start, which makes sense seeing as they were setting out to redefine "the traditional fragrance structure of Top, Middle and Base notes. Instead, a Warm core is surrounded by Feminine, Luminous notes." I find it to be the kind of warm, rich, but unassuming fragrance that can easily become a signature scent for any type of woman.
Notes:
Warm - Molten Woods, Amber Feminine - Jasmine, Ghost Lily, Magnolia, Ylang Luminous - Black Pepper, Sandalwood, Honey, Mandarin Orange Pulp $42.00 (1 oz), $52.00 (1.7 oz), $75.00 (3.4 oz) from Estée Lauder.com and their retail locations.

Nantucket Natural Oils do "Flowerbomb" by Victor and Rolf

nantucket.jpg

What They Say: "Nantucket Natural Oils contain all the good ingredients found in your favorite brand-name (e.g., Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren) fragrances without the harsh, offensive alcohol. Zero alcohol content means fewer problems for allergy sufferers, not to mention a naturally longer-lasting essence for fragrance users. And unlike some other fragrance stores - suppliers, we make natural perfumes."

Jen's Experience: The day I went to Nantucket over my 4th of July vacation was a rainy, non-descript day for the most part, but I did come away with one tremendous find: Nantucket Natural Oils. The small apothecary stores will find the perfect scent for you, or recreate your statement scent, both of which are a great find. I chose the path of recreating a scent, and was disappointed at first: their sense of Marc Jacobs was all wrong for me, and their attempts at Chanel scents for my friends did nothing for them. After a while, though, I thought of "Flowerbomb", which I seriously love but have never purchased. And let me tell you: their rendition was DEAD ON. I bought it without a second thought and have worn it pretty much every day since. My guy friends adore the scent, and so do I. An ounce of oil based scent, which costs to the tune of $75, promises to last 3 years. Plus, their non-alcohol-based scents last longer throughout the day than what you've been buying from the department store. You can also get even smaller amounts than that for trial purposes. If you live in the Boston or general Massachusetts area, I couldn't recommend more just stopping by and seeing their representation of your favorite perfume. Otherwise, drop by their website and get a sample of their rendition of a scent that you love.

Retail Price: $45.00/ 0.25 oz (Nantucket Natural Oils)

Biotherm Eau Pure Invigorating Cool Mist

biothermeaupure.jpgWhat They Say: "A vivifying fragrance resembling a white water cascade, a fresh aromatic journey, filled with pure and nurturing green fruit: green tea, lime and kiwi. An aroma extracting from nature all of its benefits for the skin, containing sage and lime essential oils. With a single generous splash, the skin feels replenished, toned and intensely refreshed, helping to reveal its natural beauty.

Revitalizing top notes of sparkling green citrus fruits: grapefruit, lemon, lime and kiwi, combined with rhubarb for clean, bracing freshness.

Purifying middle notes with the full, round fragrances of aquatic flowers like the lotus and the scent of green tea.

Warm bottom notes of moss, patchouli and musk to leave a deep, woodsy note in its wake."

Melissa Says: This scent, at least for me, is a bit too strong to spray all over. However, it IS uplifting and cool, and when spritzed once or twice, it elevates the mood a bit while smelling fresh, clean and crisp with a bit of depth. While it doesn't linger quite as long as some perfume fragrances, it can be a refreshing burst of aromatherapy for the day.

Retail Price: $36.00

Abinoam Desejo Fragrance

Abinoam_Bottle.jpgWhat They Say: "A carnal interpretation of Pomegranate; the beguiling symbol of fertility. Top notes of Pomegranate, Cassis and Peach flow seamlessly into Violet, Ylang Ylang, and Ghanan Cacao before settling on a bed of Bulgarian Blond Tobacco, Vanilla and Amber."

Melissa Says: Not for the shy, this scent feels intensely feminine and for me, the violet, ylang ylang and amber really shone through as the most recognizable players in this fragrance. It's somewhat heady at first, perhaps a little much for those who prefer subtlety when it comes to scent, but it doesn't take too long to settle into the warmth of your body heat and become more wearable. It's a classy, womanly creamy floral that has strong staying power.

Retail Price: $105.00 (at select retail stores, but don't worry, you can test a sample vial for just $7.00 at abinoam.com)

Cynthia Rowley Flower & Petal Fragrances

rowley_flower.gifAbout Flower: "A true extension of Cynthia's designs, Flower is feminine and flirty, yet sophisticated. Every note was hand-picked by Cynthia herself, creating a bouquet of florals surrounded by warm woods and musks. The notes include casablanca lily, freesia, cashmere woods, warm vanilla, skin musk, velvet woods, and sandalwood."

About Petal: "Cynthia also created a scent for the little flowers in our lives, such as our daughters. In designing Petal, she didn't need to look and further than her own daughters for inspiration. To create Petal, Cynthia wanted to take the essence of Flower and design and scent that was lighter with a more carefree sensibility. Her eight-year-old daughter even helped to pick the notes that would be in the final bouquet. The result is a floral green fragrance that captures the innocent, youthful blush of freshly bloomed lily of the valley."

rowley_petal.gifJen's Experience: This new pair of scents from Avon and Cynthia Rowley debuted just in time for Mother's Day this year, and it's easy to see the mother-daughter theme. The flower scent is stronger and surprisingly sophisticated for such an affordable scent. It's got a great mix of florals and woody scents that make it a great every day fragrance, and an excellent choice for work. I never fail to get compliments when I'm wearing it, and maybe for that reason alone it just makes me feel pretty.

Petal is clearly the less mature of the two scents, with a heavy emphasis on the floral and much less complexity than Flower. From someone who generally loves floral scents, I am less enthusiastic about wearing this one, which seems a little too girlish, but I can definitely see this as a first fragrance for the preteen or teen in your life.

I love both the packaging and bottles for both scents. They're simple and classic and look nearly antique. The white bottle of Flower is my favorite of the two, but both make an adorable addition to my dresser.

Retail Prices: Flower - $30/50 ml, Petal - $15/30 ml (Avon.com)

Diesel Fuel for Life Fragrance

diesel_fragrance.jpgWhat They Say: "As seen in Allure magazine (November 2007 issue, p58).

A secret elixir of sexy black currant, irreverent jasmine, and traditional patchouli for her.

• Based on the scent of Venetian liqueur with blended black currant and woody harmonies.
• Distilled by Annick Ménardo and Thierry WASSER.
• Choose 50mL or 75mL.
• Arrives in a lace-covered bottle."

Jen's Experience: They pretty much had me at the commercials for this fragrance, I have to say, and when I heard that jasmine was one of the main notes, I was even more excited to try it. After wearing it for a while, my excitement waned a bit. The fragrance is long-lasting, and I do think it's a very sexy blend. However, I think the patchouli is probably the strongest note in the scent, and that's frankly not my favorite. Those who like patchouli and woody scents, though, I think will be quite pleased with it.

Nanette Lepore eau de parfum

nanette lepore.jpgWhat They Say: "In order to capture Nanette Lepore's whimsically romantic creations, the perfumers abandoned the traditional - weaving together a tapestry of natural essences including threads that flow throughout the entire fragrance. The notes are delicate and white, colorful and sparkling, and warm and sensual.

Notes:
Moonstone Rose, White Peach, White Cranberry Juices, Magenta Nectar, Black Currant, Orange Jasmine, Persian Lime Juice, Velvet Violet, Amber, Indian Sandalwood.
Style:
Delicate. Colorful. Warm."

Melissa Says: This is one of my personal FAVORITE scents. Feminine, delicate, yet lush - a sort of powdery, sweet floral - this has amazing staying power and is perfect for the days when I am feeling more girly. It starts out fresh and powdery with a hint of floral, and within a few hours it grows warmer and deeper, and then my husband inevitably passes by me, smells the back of my neck, and asks what that great scent is (every. single. time.).

This would be a great romantic scent for Valentine's Day, by the way!

Retail Price: $38 - 1oz. / $58 - 1.7oz. / $78 - 3.4oz. (at sephora.com and select fragrance counters)

Usher for Her Eau de Parfum

usher.jpgWhat They Say: "Mysterious and addictive, this fragrance imparts a mouth watering sensation with a sexy heart. Voluptuous florals add sophistication and femininity. This is a floral scent for the woman who exudes confidence and sexuality. The fragrance reveals its intense allure with captivating amber and rich woody undertones.

Notes: Red Currant, Pink Freesia, Apple Blossom, Frangipani, Apricot Nectar, Blooming Jasmine, Passion Rose, Amber Wood, Sensual Musk, Cashmere Wood, Vanilla Orchid, Incense.

Style: Sensual. Confident. Enigmatic."

Melissa Says: Historically, I haven't been a huge fan of many of the fragrances that have been released under the name of various random celebrities. They seem to fall under a large hit-or-miss umbrella for me. I was pleased to realize when I tested this that I actually kind of like it.

I hesitate from raving because the initial notes aren't typically those I lean toward, but it's hard to deny how many times I found myself sniffing my own wrist throughout the day as it developed from a more crisp, dark floral to a smooth, sexy combination melting those florals with alluring depth. This would be a great scent for someone comfortable in her skin, who likes to imagine herself having an air of sophisticated mystery.

*A word of caution: a little goes a long way, so be sparing to keep it from being overwhelming in any way.

Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol's Silver Factory

warholsilver.jpgWhat They Say: "We conceived of Silver Factory as a smooth, smoky, spicy blend of interlacing incense (a key scent of the 60's), wood resin, cedarwood, and syrupy, seductive amber. But just to complicate things, we gave it a heart of jasmine, iris and violet - a scent that Warhol was especially fond of. These slightly dissonant florals combine to evoke a metallic effect - that of warmed-up, molten silver."

Melissa Says: Their description is quite accurate, I found. Also, it comes off as somewhat masculine in nature, but I still loved smelling it on my wrists. The woody notes are prevalent, but complex. This is a strong, independent. and unconventional scent for the same type of woman.

This is the first of a series of Warhol Foundation partnership scents featuring a selected example of Warhol art on the bottle.

Retail Price: $230.00 (at BondNo9.com or visit the website for retail locations)

Bond No. 9 Saks Fifth Avenue for Her

bondno9saks.jpgWhat They Say: "When New York's iconic luxury superstore meets luxury New York perfumer, the results are Bond No. 9's Saks Fifth Avenue for Him and Saks Fifth Avenue for Her. Firsts in the new genre of Retail Eaux de Parfum.

Notes: Jasmin, Tuberose, Gardenia, Vetiver, Vanilla"

Melissa Says: The most important thing to know about this fragrance? GARDENIA. If you're a fan of gardenia, this is definitely the scent for you, as that is really the predominant note. Not for the wallflower, this scent is not the least bit shy in its gardenia glory. For me, it was a little more intense than I'm accustomed to, but of course the true and full-bodied quality of Bond No. 9's formulas gives you a large fragrance impact for your money, which isn't a bad thing when you find something that really expresses who you are.

Retail Price: $125 1.7 fl oz / $185 3.4 fl oz (online at Bond No. 9 or find a retail location near you on the website)

Review: Donna Karan Gold Eau de Parfum

dkgold.jpgWhat They Say: Passionate. Seductive. Forever. Donna Karan Gold embraces and illuminates the woman who wears it. It reflects her inner spirit, the glowing light irresistible to all who come close.

Gold echoes both the essential purity and hidden complexity of a woman. Donna's personal favorite, the white Casablanca lily, blooms at its heart - delicate and intoxicating. Fluid amber gives the fragrance its depth and sexiness while sparkling acacia, white clove, golden balsam, glittering gold pollen, and East Indian patchouli bring forth the intoxicating allure of the lily.

Donna collaborated with jewelry artist Robert Lee Morris to create the bottle for Donna Karan Gold. Robert's signature technique of using metal in his jewelry was incorporated into the luxurious armored gold metal sleeve representing the fragrance's spirit.

Notes:
Casablanca Lily, Fluid Amber, Acacia, White Clove, Golden Balsam, Gold Pollen, East Indian Patchouli.

Style:
Pure. Warm. Sexy.

Melissa Says: At first spray, this gives off a crisp floral scent sparked with the amber. Within minutes, it develops into a lusciously warm, sultry, almost creamy mix combined with that fabulous floral tone sitting on top. This fragrance is incredibly sexy, understatedly glamorous, and a little mysterious. You will definitely feel like a WOMAN wearing this beautifully balanced scent.

Retail Price: $75.00 1.7 oz. or $50 .2 oz. rollerball applicator (at or at select department stores)

Fall Product Preview: Badgley Mischka Fleurs de Nuit

badgleymischka_fdn.jpg
"We were in a beautiful Moon Garden and were captivated by the gorgeous white florals and the shimmering moonlight -- Fleurs de Nuit captures that ethereal and dramatic moment." -- Mark Badgley and James Mischka

What They Say: "Glamorous. Vintage. Elegant. Luminous as the evening sky, this luxurious white floral is radiant with nuances of lush green notes, succulent fruits, and the sophisticated depth of glowing amber. A vintage white floral with a glamorous heart...experience Fleurs de Nuit.

On the Top - Glamorous Fragrant as the evening air Badgley Mischka Fleurs de Nuit opens with fresh florals, including Pristine Magnolia and Quince Blossom, that sparkle with Bergamot and lush green notes.

In the Heart - Vintage Radiant White Florals, Night Blooming Jasmine and Orange Blosso, nuzzle mouth-watering White Peach for an iconic heart.

In the Drydown - Elegant The dry down imparts the depth of night as Silky Woods and Glowing Amber resonate for a captivating sensuality."

Jen's Experience: Last fall, I tried the original Badgley Mischka scent, a rich, musky scent that fit right in with my fall fragrance wardrobe. This season, full of Garden Party eyeshadows and other florals in unexpected places (at least for fall), the new fragrance from Badgley Mischka turns the tables around on the original and brings the florals to the forefront.

Personally, I am always a fan of floral perfumes, but always found them to be a little too bright and sunny for the cooler fall months. This one, though, manages to make a rich fragrance out of white flowers and a hint of musk. The result? A fantastic, unexpected fragrance for the fall season.

Suggested Retail: $90.00, available this October

Review: Dolce & Gabbana "the one" fragrance

dolcegabbanatheone.jpgWhat They Say: "Who is the one? A true diva and beautiful superstar in her own right, she personifies unabashed femininity. Defiant, liberated and passionate. Her look is always spectacular and glorious. A gorgeous chameleon with a soulful heart. The woman wearing the one is demanding, determined and competitive. She doesn't wait for things to happen. Like a true diva, the one is sensual, seductive and spectacular.

the one is a warm, oriental floral, with modern sensuality. A fragrance with a strong personality, and a contrasting golden sweetness.

Created for the ultimate diva, the one is at once tempting, modern and glamorous, embracing a touch of classicism. The top notes radiate a vibrant luminosity, with a sun-touched citrus blend of bergamot and mandarin. Warm fruity notes of luscious lychee and succulent peach add to the delight.

The passionate heart evokes and exploding femininity, with an opulent floral soul comprised of madonna lily, muguet and jasmine, creating a distinct, audacious signature.

An unexpected hint of plum glows as the base finally blooms with the luscious allure of precious vetyver, accentuated with the lasting warmth of vanilla and sweetened ambery-musk notes."

Melissa Says: Wow, this description could not be more accurate. My impression of this scent is that it can be quite strong at first, so I don't choose to apply it right before I walk out the door, but earlier. What I first notice is a burst of a powdery floral type of scent, and then as it wears onto the skin for a while, that powdery scent becomes much more subtle and alluring and mixes with some of the warm, sweet notes in a very pleasant way that lingers for hours.

I picture this scent on a confident woman who is sophisticated yet youthful who likes to feel sexy.

Retail Price: $62 for 1.6 fl. oz. / $82 for 2.5 fl. oz. (at Dolce & Gabbana boutiques, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and other department stores)

Review: Acqua di Parma Arancia di Capri (Capri Orange) Eau de Toilette

acquadiparmaarancia.jpgWhat They Say: "The sophisticated world of Acqua di Parma with its impeccable and understated refinement, presents Blu Mediterraneo: a collection of products whose noble ingredients create the link between essences and emotions, awakening pleasant feelings of well-being. Capri, ever glamorous, fashionable and cosmopolitan, is the star of many films. It is the very essence of delightful idleness and relaxed exclusive rituals. The qualities of the (Arancia) - Capri Orange are based on the soothing properties of the perfectly blended essential oils of orange, lemon and tangerine.

Lisa Says: Of the four fragrances comprising the Blu Mediterraneo Collection (Arancia, Cypresso, Mandorlo and Fico) I was given Arancia to review. It is, indeed, cosmopolitan, sparkling yet not over done and a versatile fragrance in this reviewer's opinion. Top notes of Sorrento orange, tangerine and grapefruit are so refreshing and light in the August heat, while base notes of caramel and musk give the citrus some "cling" to the skin without being heavy. Heart notes of Petitgrain, cardamom and mate leaves tie top and base notes together beautifully without being too "woodsy". These lovely core notes marry the brightness of the citrus with the warmth of the caramel and musk creating a light but sensual scent .

I really fell in love with this fragrance and can't seem to find anything similar amongst my growing collection on the vanity. It initially goes on with a citrus that's more tangerine or, perhaps it's the "zest" of the citrus that the nose notices first. It dries down to a soft, powdery lemon fragrance - something akin to lemonade but not overly sweet thanks to the musk and petitgrain. The difference between the two is what makes this such a lovely and versatile fragrance. During the day I felt that Arancia was refreshing and cooling, by dinner it was lovely, romantic and warm. I'm really enjoying it now but I can also imagine this fragrance around late fall. Perhaps it's the blend of orange and spice and caramel when it dries down. My little tester bottle is already long empty but is on the list to be replaced with a larger size.

Retail Price: Eau de Toilette - 60ml/$57 & 120ml/$88 (at neimanmarcus.com and other select retailers and boutiques).

Review: Bond No. 9 Coney Island Eau de Parfum

bondno9coneyisland.jpgWhat They Say: "What is the smell of fun and how do you bottle it? That was our mission at Bond No. 9 when we decided to capture the essence of Coney Island and turn it into an eau de parfum.
Notes: Margarita mix, melon guava, cinnamon, chocolate, caramel, musk, vanilla, cedarwood, sandalwood."

Melissa Says: This one isn't for the shy, that's for sure. Don't get me wrong, it's not overbearing unless you over-apply it, but its bolder notes may not appeal as much to those who want their fragrance to be a bit understated. Looking at a part of that long mix of notes included - margarita mix, melon guava, chocolate, caramel, vanilla - it seems that this scent would be way too sweet for a lot of wearers who tend to edge away from those scents, but I think the slight spice of the cinnamon and the warmth of the musk, cedarwood, and sandalwood temper the sweetness. I really do think this scent is for when you're feeling fun, just as Bond No. 9 attempted. A little on the back of the neck and on the wrists lasts ALL day long. This scent is dense but youthful.

Review: Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile Eau de Parfum

acquadiparmairis.jpgWhat They Say: "The iris flower, blossoming joyously or poised on the threshold of bloom, pure in its vibrat and vivid colours, has always been an expression of femininity.

Acqua di Parma echoes this idea with the creation of Iris Nobile Eau Parfum - where the sophistication of a classic floral bouquet is accentuated and given allure with chypre - the most feminine of all treasured age-old harmonies.

In this captivating new perfume from Acqua di Parma, the iris uses the entire fragrance pyramid to convey the vibrant impact of its velvety character. The experience unfolds with a sophisticated harmony of iris petals and star anise enriching the fragrance's fresh crystalline head notes. At the scent's heart, the aristocratic notes of the iris fuse with the intensity of pure ylang-ylang and the warm tones of oakmoss, to add a burst of charm to the fragrance. The deep base tones resonate with the warm scent of iris root woven together with vanilla and amber crystals. A combination of iris with oakmoss and patchouli - dominant notes in the chypre - scent - expresses new emotions, vibrant tones and an incredible longevity.

A fragrance is created where sensuality and sophistication are expressed to the utmost degree in each detail."

Melissa Says: I took this fragrance on vacation with me recently, and it was the only scent I used for the entire week. I was so delighted with it every time I put it on that I kept throwing my wrist near my husband's face saying, "Wow, SMELL that! Isn't it GOOD?" Incredibly womanly yet refreshingly subtle, this pretty scent is an instant winner from the very top notes all the way to the base.

Unlike many scents which take a moment to really be appealing after being applied, with its delicate florals combined with just enough warmth, this one is immediately pleasing. There is no bite or overbearing heaviness. The scent becomes more creamy and enticing as it wears. And staying power was not an issue for me at all, even in ninety-degree heat. I really fell in love with this one.

Retail Price: $95/50 ml, $145/100ml ($80-120 for eau de toilette) (all at neimanmarcus.com, bergdorfgoodman.com, and barneys.com and select boutiques)

Review: The House of of Creative Scentualization Light Comes from Within fragrance

cslightfromwithin.jpgWhat They Say: "Light Comes From Within is a sheer, luminous fragrance that celebrates new beginnings. Its sparkling bergamot top note introduces a captivatingly fresh middle note accord of freesia, honeysuckle and night blooming jasmine. Fresh oceanic musk and white cedar form a base note accord of subtle depth. This fragrance evokes dancing California sunlight, coastal air and more ethereal manifestations of nature's beauty."

What Melissa Says: The floral combination in this fragrance is so pretty; it's perfectly balanced and very feminine, without any overpowering bite. When it starts out, it remind me slightly of a delicate lily-of-the-valley scent, and once it develops on the skin it warms into a fabulously romantic blend. I also didn't find staying power to be an issue with this fragrance at all. This is actually one of my favorites from what I've tried in the past few months. If I were in the market to splurge on a perfect summer feminine scent, I'd consider this one well worth the purchase.

Retail Price: $95.00 (at creativescent.com or go here to find a retail location near you)

Review: Masaki Matsushimi Cherry

masakicherries.jpgWhat They Say: "Cherry blossom season is an important and symbolic time of year in Japan. It marks the end of winter and the rebirth of nature with deep philosophical meanings: The cherry blossom (sakura) represents absolute beauty and is a reminder of the ephemeral nature of life, and the cherry fruit is a symbol of harmony. It's only natural that Japanese designer Masaki Matsushima captured this facet of his country's culture and rendered it in a conceptual perfume.

It is quite a challenge to create a feminine fragrance that is based on the cherry without it falling into the category of edible scents used in liquors or candies. Jean Jacques, Masaki's "nose," managed this subtle combination of the mat; base with a cherry top and blossom heart.

Notes:
Cherry, Blackcurrant, Bilberry, Watermelon, Lotus Flower, Cherry Blossom, Sweet Pea, Raspberry, Crystal Musk, Blackberry.
Style:
Feminine. Inspiring. Soft."

What Melissa Says: I'd like to avoid redundancy here, but my experience with this fragrance has matched the description almost perfectly. For those of you not convinced that this isn't a syrupy -sweet scent that's hard to pull off, I strongly encourage you to either go to a Sephora store for a sample or find a fragrance counter somewhere so you can smell it. You will be convinced that this isn't at all for the little girls, but for women. It's florals are what predominate in the beginning of wear, yet even those are gently subtle and pretty with just a hint of the berries. It only gets better and more tantalizing as it sits on the skin, when the berries and musk create a delicate, slightly sweet combination.

Retail Price: $32.50/.68 oz. Eau de Parfum spray; $60.00/1.35 oz. Eau de Parfum spray (only available at Sephora in stores or go here to purhcase online)

Review: Kiehl's Original Musk Oil Blend No. 1 Eau de Toilette Spray

kiehlsmusk.jpgWhat They Say:
" * Our Kiehl's Signature Scent
* For both Men and Women
* Convenient Eau de Toilette spray
* Scent not derived from animals
* Not tested on animals

This modern version of our classic signature scent is based on the unique blend that is Kiehl's Musk. Our special Musk "recipe" begins with an initial creamy, fresh citrus burst of Bergamot Nectar and Orange Blossom...followed by a soft floral bouquet of Rose, Lily, Ylang-Ylang and Neroli. Finally, Original Musk Eau de Toilette dries down to a warm, sensual Oriental finish of Tonka Nut, White Patchouli and, of course, Musk...the soul of this distinctively modern scent."

*To see the entire interesting story behind the '20's-originating Kiehl's Musk Oil fragrance, click here.

Melissa Says: I am in general a huge fan of most musk and musk-based fragrances. I think that you also should typically like musk to appreciate and wear this scent. It comes out a little strong - there is nothing shy or delicate about it initially out of the spray dispenser. This is why you only need to apply very lightly in one or two spots. In those first few seconds, it is quite strong I imagine for most, and seems to have little feminine complexity. Within about 5 minutes, however, that first impression begins to be replaced with a lighter, slightly powdery floral tone. Eventually, the scent warms throughout the day and becomes a minimally sweet musk.

This fragrance isn't very feminine by most standards, and if you only prefer to wear scents that are floral, airy, delicate, sweet or lighthearted, then this isn't for you. But if you do like to try deeper fragrances which possibly tend to be more gender neutral or if you like the effect of wearing natural fragrance oils such as patchouli, musk, sandalwood, etc., then you may very well enjoy this scent.

Retail Price: $55 3.4oz. (at kiehls.com or go here to find a retail location that sells Kiehl's products near you)

Review: Estee Lauder’s Beautiful “Summer Fun” Limited Edition Fragrance

esteebeautifulsummer.jpgWhat They Say: "Celebrate the season of fun.

It's a cool, refreshing spray version of Beautiful, the fragrance of a thousand flowers. A tender bouquet of violets and lilies, roses and lilacs, marigold and orange blossoms.

Limited edition bottle adds to the fun with a swirling modern design. Just spray all over...and step into summer."

Jamie’s Thoughts: I’m typically conflicted about perfume re-runs, most likely because smart perfumeries tend to reinvent their bestsellers, often with mixed results. The original “Beautiful” was launched in 1985 and remains a bestseller today, with a huge reputation to uphold.

Estee Lauder’s intentions were good with this lighter version of the classic fragrance. The floral notes are all still present, but sadly, the hints of citrus, melon, and orange blossoms have been lessened, which (in my opinion) throws off the balance that made the original “Beautiful” so amazing to wear. Those of you that love the original for its base notes of sandalwood, myrrh, and frankincense won’t be very happy with this seasonal reincarnation, as those notes have been downgraded to a supporting role. I also found it quite heavy for something that is being marketed as an “all over, refreshing spray.” If you like intense florals, you’ll love this.

Fortunately, the “Summer Fun” version retains the casual, yet sophisticated quality of the original. It works just as easily with sweats as it does with a pinstripe suit. Be forewarned, however: you may have to reapply. I wore this every day for an entire week, and by my afternoon Diet Coke break, it was gone. All in all? The swirled-pattern bottle is very distinctive, unfortunately, the fragrance is not.

Retail Price: $49.50 for 2.5 oz. (at esteelauder.com and at select fragrance counters in department stores)

Review: Bond No. 9's The Scent of Peace

bondpeace.jpgWhat They Say: "It Takes a Neighborhood - The Sparkling-Fresh Scent of our Civic Dreams.

Notes:
Black currant, lily of the valley, musk

For every bottle sold, Seeds of Peace will recieve a portion of the sales. Seeds of Peace is an organization that is dedicated to empowering young leaders from regions of conflict with the leadership skills required to advance reconciliation and coexistence. (seedsofpeace.org)

Melissa Says: Well, I suppose if you're going to be spending this kind of money on any beauty product, even a high-end fragrance, then it helps to know that a bit of it is going toward a beneficial cause.

But let's get to the business of the scent. It's not necessarily a classic-in-the-making...in my opinion it's quite modern. That doesn't mean it's annoying or not pleasing. In fact, I like the upbeat heartiness of it. It's not gentle and airy, but is instead full and empowering. At first the black currant may be a bit intense, but once it has warmed up on the skin the sexy complexity of the floral musk helps to temper that. You're left with a feminine, crisp, and slightly sultry combination that isn't too heavy for warmer temperatures.

Retail Price: $125 for 1.7 fl oz / $195 for 3.4 fl oz (at bondno9.com)

Review: Elizabeth Arden Mediterranean

Elizabeth Arden MediterraneanWhat They Say: "A radiant woody floral. A modern expression of sparkling radiance.

Key Notes
Sparkling Radiance: Peach Nectar Sorbet, Sicilian Mandarin, Damask Plum
Unforgettable Bloom:Radiant Wisteria, Star Magnolia, Madagascar Orchid
Lasting Impression: Addictive Sandalwood, Fluid Skin Musk, Golden Amber Whisper "

Jen's Experience: I have long been a fan of Elizabeth Arden's scents. They're not the most sophisticated of scents -- it's hard to detect the notes or the individual layers -- but they're all pretty and ultra-feminine. If you're a fan of other Arden scents, I think you'll like this one as well. It's lighter than some of the others, and has a summery feel to it, making it perfect not just for work, but also for more casual occasions. Three spritzes in the morning last make me feel pretty throughout the day.

Retail Price: $57.50 (ElizabethArden.com)

Review: Bond No. 9's Bryant Park

bondno9bryant.jpgWhat They Say: "Bryant Park is the inspiration for and name of Bond No. 9's 28th and most fashion-oriented eau de parfum: a rose-patchouli concoction with pink pepper added for dissonance.

Notes: Lily of the Valley, Rhubarb, Pink Pepper, Rose, Patchouli, Raspberry, Amber"

Melissa Says: In my opinion there's simply no way to fully appreciate this scent unless you get a chance to smell how it develops on your skin. It starts out fairly crisp and has a bit of a floral bite to it, and it then begins to get this incredible spicy but subtle warmth. The patchouli is barely distinguishable, in case that's something that might make you shy away from the description. It all just blends together into a luscious mix, with the raspberry coming through at the end nicely. Overall, this is a flirtatious yet sophisticated fragrance that is not too overpowering (but a little does go a long way).

Review: Very Irrésistible Givenchy Summer Sun

givenchysummersun.jpgWhat They Say: "Summer's carefree, energetic mood gets captured in a bright, vivid glass flacon of fresh pink and warm orange in the new fragrance, Very Irrésistible Givenchy Summer Sun.

Evoking warm sunny days and sultry nights, this new limited edition adds lychee, frangipani and cashmeran to the iconic rose essence of Very Irrésistible Givenchy. It also has a higher concentration of alcohol so that the scent remains regardless of where spontaneity leads.

New top note:
-Lychee creates a juicy, fruity cocktail effect.

New heart notes:
-Frangipani flower creates a lush, exotic mood.

New base note:
-Cashmeran mimics the wearm feeling of the sun on the skin.

Careful! Limited Edition."

Melissa Says: This is defintely a fragrance to get you into a warm-weather mood. The combination of floral and fruity is wonderful. I actually am not especially drawn to the original Very Irrésistible fragrance because of its more direct floral emphasis. But that doesn't mean you won't enjoy this if you are a fan of the original. There's a perfect additional hint here of the exotic and fresh which turns this into a fragrance I can love. Another thing that I like is that the staying power is exceptional, just as they say.

Retail Price: $50, 2.5 oz/75 ml (available now in fine department stores nationwide and soon at Sephora.com)

Review: ZENTS Eau de Toilette Body Spray in "Fresh"

zents.jpgWhat They Say: "Versatile, aromatherapeutic and made to work together. As a fragrance, they are unisex, complex and classically designed. Our sprays are also great as environmental scents – ideal for a spa treatment room, home, or office.

Fresh was inspired by the birth of ZENTS Co-Founder, Michelle Nemcek-Lobo's baby girl, Ava Sophia. In celebration of her birth, Fresh was created to evoke cheerful thoughts of a newborn baby girl. The fragrance is clean, delicate and flawless in design--just like little Ava Sophia. A light Spring and Summer scent, Fresh is the epitome of femininity-ideal for women of all ages, even as young as Ava Sophia herself. The true beauty of Fresh is it's graceful enough for a woman, yet simple enough for a baby girl.

Fresh has top notes of cucumber and green apple, with linden and heliotrope blended to create a euphoric fragrance that is soft and feminine."

Jamie’s Thoughts: I found it pleasant to wear, if a bit heady in the floral department. The top notes are spearmint and cucumber, which heat up into an intense middle note of warm heliotrope. The dry down left me nonplussed – powdery in smell, and too bland to really register. This is a great, light floral for anyone who is wary of smelling too flowery. On the other hand, that lightness gives it a tendency to fade quickly – I applied each morning at 8am, and by lunch, it was gone. All in all, a bit of a disappointment.

Retail Price: $47.00 for 1.7 oz. (at spalook.com)

Review: Sharon Bolton Scents

About Truth Perfume Oil: "A refreshing, clean citrus … think tangy lemon-lime … softened by an exotic floral and an airy, sheer musk … fresh like a warm seabreeze!” About Soul Perfume Oil: “Sweet tropical notes that will evoke a memory for your soul. Juicy papaya, luscious pineapple, and creamy coconut with undertones of clean musk. It’s clean enough to sweep you away to the Islands.”
About the Luv Perfume Oil: “An intoxicating, ultimately feminine scent of rare Pink Gardenia, lush Hawaiian white flowers, and a hint of creamy vanilla with a delicate whisper of white musk. What a way to fall in LUV!”
About the Body Lotion: “A rich, luxuriously scented lotion packed with vitamins an an antioxidant that leaves skin silky and glowing year round.”
About the Body Wash: “This pearly, perfumed ‘shower cream’ is lotion enriched with Shea Butter and White Tea leaving skin feeling moisturized and revitalized. The ‘shower cream’ creates a rich, refreshing lather for the shower as well as plenty of bubbles for the bath.”

Toya’s Take: I was impressed from the beginning by Sharon Bolton Scents. The company sent a large black box with the scents beautifully packaged inside – a full-size bottle of Luv perfume oil, body lotion and body wash and samples of the Truth and Soul perfume oils. Sharon Bolton Scents is a fairly new company located in Santa Barbara, CA and the company is committed to giving back through donations to The Muscular Dystrophy Association, Susan G. Komen Foundation, The Teddy Bear Foundation, The Diabetes Association and others. The products are cruelty free and the packaging is 100% recyclable.

After trying all Perfume Oils, I found that I liked them all, particularly Soul and Luv. Truth is a light, springy scent, but citrus isn’t exactly my thing. However, I would wear it at a time when I was in a very good, light-hearted mood or when I wanted to put myself in such a mood. Soul is my kind of scent – tropical, sweet but not overpowering, and clean. I feel like I’m on vacation when I put it on. It’s totally luxurious. Luv is the scent for which I was able to test all three products. I’m glad that I like the Luv scent – it is quite close to one of my favorite fragrances, Kuumba Made Pikaki Lei. The Perfume Oils are long-lasting – longer lasting than perfume sprays. The Body Lotion is as rich and moisturizing as is advertised – it leaves my skin smooth and soft … it actually glistens! When I layer the lotion after having bathed using the Body Wash (which, by the way, offers creamy lather and gorgeous bubbles), I feel especially pampered.

I will be purchasing the full size lotion and body wash in the Soul scent. I can’t wait for my nightly Island vacation!

Retail Price: $42 for 1/8 oz. of the Perfume Oil, $24 for 8 oz. of the Body Wash , $27 for 8 oz. of the Body Lotion. (SharonBoltonScents.com)

Bond No. 9 Westside Perfume

What They Say: "A fragrance inspired by the West Side's long monopoly on music. Home to Carnegie Hall, the Copacabana, Lincoln Center, Studio 54, Broadway musicicals as well as rock and disco music. It finds the scent equivalent for the sounds of music in its full-bodied, mellow composition, its undulating rhythms, its harmonies, its pitch - and yes, its notes. Fragrance, like music, is open to interpretation. Everyone who sniffs it will hear - and smell - a different melody of their own."

Notes: Rose, Ylang Ylang, Peony, Sandalwood, Amber, Vanilla, Musk

Jen's Experience: Right out of the box, this scent is absolutely lovely -- a terrific mix of romantic florals with a touch of vanilla and musk to keep the florals from being too cloying. Where the perfume I tested previously, Tom Ford Black Orchid, seemed to be heavy on the spice and light on the floral, this formula turns that around and puts the florals more in the forefront. This is still an excellent blend of fragrances for those who resist the floral scents, and the musk is not so heavy that it turns me (one who loves florals) off. This scent is incredibly long-lasting as well; perfume applied to my wrists before work is still fragrant upon my arrival home.

If you're in the New York area, be sure to pop into one of the Bond No. 9 stores to check out this scent in their beautiful decorative bottles, as well as their many other scents and candles.

Retail Price: $125.00/1.7 oz (Bond No. 9 stores or online at Saks Fifth Avenue)

Tom Ford Black Orchid eau de parfum

What They Say: "A luxurious and sensual fragrance, Tom Ford Black Orchid with its rich dark accords and alluring potion of black orchids and spice is new and timeless.

  • Sensuous top notes of Black Truffle and Ylang mingled with fresh Bergamot and delectable Black Currant.
  • Dramatic middle notes of dark, tempting Florals and rich Fruit Accords. The heart is deepened with the intoxicating Lotus Wood.
  • Decadent base notes of Patchouli, Incense and Vetiver. Vanilla Tears add a fluid creaminess to warm Balsam and smooth Sandalwood.
  • In a black glass bottle with a hand-tied cord and a gold-tone name plaque with engraved lettering."

Jen's Experience: I generally think of myself as a floral fragrance kind of girl, and despite the name, I think the most striking part of this fragrance is the spicyness. Fragrances that list out notes of patchouli, vanilla, sandalwood -- this is normally stuff I would stay far away from. But the mix of floral with all of these other notes, is downright appealing and I have to say that this has become one of my favorite scents and is tops in the rotation right now.

Although the scent is striking and really lasts a long time (I can still smell it on my wrists in the afternoon), it's not so perfumey that it's offensive. I can wear this fragrance to work with a pretty suit or I can wear it on a date and it feels just as appropriate for both. When I first got it and sprayed it on, my boyfriend raved about it, and at work I've got coworkers asking where they can buy it. The scent is so well balanced between floral and spicy, it may be the perfect scent for a lot of you out there, so I definitely recommend checking it out if you get a chance.

Product Line Feature: Parfumerie Generale

parfumeriegen2.jpgWhat They Say: "Created by chemist-turned-perfumer Pierre Guillaume, Parfumerie Generale (a play on his initials) boasts one of the most exciting perfume collections in many, many years. Unusual combinations and an unabashed, pure joy in the creation of fragrances that aren’t overly “intellectual” or too weird to wear (while still offering something utterly unique) are hallmarks of this amazing line. Full of personality and highly distinctive, every single one of the perfumes in this line bears its own strong character; there’s no fluffy, forgettable ‘filler’ perfumes here. Many of the dark fragrances are set off by something sweet; the lighter fragrances have a dash of wood or tea some other anchoring scent…always unexpected, and flat-out exciting. We know you’ll agree."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: These scents are another that I was introduced to by LuckyScent, and I'm incredibly impressed. It's true, not each particular fragrance in the line may be perfect for you, but of the 13 currently offered online I believe that most of you could find something appealing to your tastes. These last a very long time on the skin and have wonderful complexity which reveals itself to you the longer you wear the fragrances. There is a delicious richness to these scents and they linger for HOURS.

My favorite so far? Hyperessence Matale (12). When I asked my husband to give me a word to describe this scent featuring black tea, citrus, cedar leaves, musk, pepper and jasmine, he smelled it on me thought for a moment, and said "Sexy?" I told him that wasn't something fabulously descriptive to put up on DeLush. But he's a guy...I suppose that's about as detailed as he could get, so I'll take it.

Retail Price: $80 OR $3 for a sample! (at luckyscent.com - and I highly suggest that you try out some samples because they'll last you MORE than long enough to figure out if you like something or not and you won't lose a lot of money if you don't)

(Remember, DeLush does not give ratings to fragrances because each individual has unique preferences and body chemistry that affect their experience with scents. What we want to do is give you our best explanation of the fragrance from our experience and let you know about the staying power, etc. For more fragrance ideas, just go to the "Perfumes" category to see what else we've tried!)

Estee Lauder Pleasures Gwyneth Paltrow Edition

What They Say: "From a luxurious, limited edition collection of delights inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow, all surrounding you Estée Lauder pleasures, her favorite fragrance.

The limited edition Eau de Parfum Spray design gleams with golden highlights and a soft pink frosted bottle. It evokes Gwyneth Paltrow's own sense of femininity and beauty.

Estée Lauder pleasures is the delightful new spirit in fragrance. Fresh as flowers after the rain, it's a sheer floral created from lilies and peonies, jasmine and Karo-Karounde blossoms. All tingling with the rare essence of exotic Baie Rose.

Experience the joy of life's little pleasures."

Jen's Experience: I was thrilled to get to try this limited edition perfume from Estee Lauder. I absolutely love floral perfumes in general, and the combination in the description sounds amazing. When I am wearing it though, I would have liked to have been able to detect the scent of the jasmine, lilies or peonies, instead the fragrance was more of a generic floral, and a bit overwhelming at that. I think this is fine perfume for the office (in small doses), but it isn't one that I could see making my signature scent. I also think this fragrance would make an excellent holiday gift for an older woman in your life.

Product Feature: Profumum Fragrances at LuckyScent.com

profumum.jpgWhat They Say: "We have been working long and hard to bring this line to Luckyscent, and to the United States, after falling in love with these extraordinary scents from Italy. Profumum comes to us from Rome, but its origins stretch further back to a small town called Sant Elena Sannita and a family with a long history of being artisans. When Celestino and Lucia Durante left Sant Elena for Rome after the Second World War, they took a pride of craftsmanship and history that they passed on to their offspring. They opened a tiny storefront, which over time grew into a chain of stores, featuring curios, hand-made soaps, fragrances and beauty products and this chain of shops was passed down to the grandchildren of Celestino and Luisa, who decided in 1996 to start a line of exclusive fragrances. These scents are exquisitely crafted to evoke emotions, memories and a sense of their beloved Italy. These rich and layered fragrances are designed to work equally well on men and women, and, amazingly, they really do. We are proud to introduce to you the wonderful scents of Profumum."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This is an incredible collection of unique, inviting fragrances. You really have to go check out the descriptions of each to get an idea of the style of these fragrances. They last a long time and warm well on your skin, with rich, nature-inspired notes that will have people asking what you are wearing. They aren't "girly" or "flowery", but more like a sophisticated, warm interpretation of natural oils and scents. Some are unisex. I would say that if you are used to wearing essential oils or like the idea of something less "perfumey", these are definitely worth a test.

My favorites? Acqua e Zucchero - a warm musky-sweet honey (almost caramel), Fiori d'Ambra - an amber-based scent that warms to a subtle sweetness, and Patchouly, a unique mix of patchouli.

*These are NOT CHEAP, so I would highly recommend ordering samples from LuckyScent before you dish out for the full shebang.

Retail Price: $190 (exclusively at LuckyScent.com)

Review: Elizabeth Arden Red Door Velvet eau de parfum

eavelvet.jpgWhat They Say: "Wrap yourselv in velvet. Red Door Velvet. A new feeling in fragrance. As glamorous as original Red Door, but with a sensual softness all its own. A feminie bouque of rich florals combine with fresh notes of aromatic Earl Grey Tea to reveal a veil of airy musk and a feeling of velvety softness.
Entice: Fresh notes of aromatic Earl Grey Tea accord masterfully combine with bursts of bergamot and precious tea leaves.
Enchant: A feminine bouquet of pink peony accented with white freesia and jasmine petals opens to reveal the sensual warmth of patchouli dipped in golden honey.
Embrace: A veil of airy musks and warm vanila creates a feeling of absolute velvety softness."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: As a young teenager, I remember having a real thing for the original Red Door fragrance. It seemed so warm and sophisticated, the kind of scent I wanted to be able to wear when I was an adult. I tore out many of its fragrance inserts from magazines, storing them away in my desk thinking that someday, I would get myself that perfume. I actually never did buy the original for some reason, even though I continued to find myself pulling up the flap of those inserts to take a whiff whenever I came across it.

Now here comes the newest incarnation of the scent: Red Door Velvet. I have to tell you, if I fell in love with Red Door in its original form, there was little hope for me here. I love the slight spice of the tea notes when it's first applied, the way it warms quicky on the skin, and how it maintains a feminine sophistication without being too stuffy. Also, when the fragrance has worn for a while, the subtle musky sweetness lingers for hours.

This is definitely a fragrance that makes you feel like a LADY.

Retail Price: $42.50 1.7oz, $52.50 3.3oz or $59.00 for a fragrance set of a 1.7oz eau de parfum spray and 3.3oz perfumed body lotion (available at select department stores and other retailers nationwide)

Review: Fresh Scents / Terri Fragrances in Oh Baby! and Dream

freshscents.jpgWhat They Say: (about Oh Baby!)"Sensual, Sophisticated, Irresistible: This hypnotic blend of China Musk and Pikaki will drive you (and him!) wild. A beautiful and long lasting scent with tropical undertones is simply irresistible."

(about Dream) "Sweet and Earthy, Sexy and Strong: This fresh scent is an expressly superior blend of vanilla and fig. For the woman who wants to leave a serious impression, don’t go to bed without it."

Alissa’s Opinion: I really liked that these fragrances didn’t have a lot of different notes. Their simplicity is what makes them so delicious and wearable. Both lasted for ages after application due to the amount of oils in an eau de parfum. The packaging comes with adorable tattoo-style drawings on the labels and cute names for each perfume.

Oh Baby! is a classic musky fragrance with a little shimmer of rich floral Pikaki. I tend to go for lighter, more feminine scents, so this wasn’t my favorite of the two. I think it is a perfect cold weather perfume for anyone who likes musk. It is a very powerful scent and it lasts for hours, even when applied sparingly.

Dream is a beautifully warm and powdery vanilla scent. It is very sweet but has a crisp and clean side to it that is hard to explain. It reminds me of coming out of a hot shower and smelling your clean hair while eating one of Grandma’s frosted sugar cookies. This is one fragrance I can see myself wearing in all seasons, for day or night, as it is very subtle without being unnoticeable.

Review: Stella McCartney Stella Eau De Parfum Roll-On

What They Say: "A fragrance based on the contrast between the freshness and softness of the rose, and the dark sensuality of amber, Stella is a sophisticated scent focused on an intense sense of femininity.
Notes:
Rose, Peony Flower, Mandarin, Rose Absolute, Amber.
Style:
Sensual. Intense. Feminine."

Jen's Experience: Ever since I tried the Lulu Starlet perfume with it's roll-on applicator, I've been all about roll-on fragrance. I find it easier to apply just the right amount, and it's easier to throw in my purse if I need a refresh later on in the day. With Sephora exclusively selling an inexpensive roll-on version of this fragrance, I had to try it.

I have always liked more floral fragrances, but most seem too light and airy for fall and winter wear. However, this fragrance, which is definitely in the floral category, manages to find a way to be both floral and suitable for cooler weather with the addition of Amber. It's warm without the musky undertones that most of my fall fragrances have. I find the wear to be pretty good (6-8 hours) for the roll-on version, but I haven't tried the spray perfume to see how that compares. This is one of my favorite new fragrances of the year, and a permanent member of my over-sized fall bag.

Review: Terranova Red Tea and Cocoa Blossom Perfume Essence

terranovaredtea.jpgWhat They Say: "The purest form of this lush scent dazzles with exotic African Red Tea flowers, seductive cocoa blossoms, marine breezes and sparkling orange.

[This] pampering formula is scented with the exotic aroma of Red Tea and Cocoa Blossom. Inspired by the dazzling flowers of the African Red Tea bush, that cause even the air to taste sweet, this magical journey continues with a lush mix of seductive cocoa blossoms, jasmine and lotus, all splashed with marine breezes and sparkling orange."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: While this fragrance wasn't exactly as exotic as I had anticipated, it's still got fantastic staying power as most essential oil-type fragrances like this do (think The Body Shop). It's quite fresh, and the citrus is perhaps one of the strongest notes at first. As it wears on, the soft florals make their way into the forefront.

This may be a bit strong on the citrus end for some of you, unless that is a note you favor. I picture this as being great for someone young or young at heart, who enjoys a relaxed and casual scent that is a bit crisp.

Retail Price: $13.95 (at uncommonscents.com or call 800.966.3457 to get information about retail locations near you)

Review: Creative Scentualization’s “Comes From Within” Trio

trio.jpgWhat They Say: (About the Trio) “Creative Scentualization’s “Comes From Within” Trio of fragrances was conceived out of Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s desire to pay tribute to the phenomena of inner beauty. As an artist, she has always striven to create fragrances that express the individuality of the wearer and entice those around them. These latest designs are no different, and are conceptually based on the powerful connection between the spirit, heart, and mind. Each fragrance is formulated to evolve differently on everyone, and can be worn alone or layered with other fragrances in the trio for uniquely beautiful results. Wear these exquisite perfumes, and prepare to enter that place where all great journeys begin.” (About “Light”) “Light comes from within is a sheer, luminous fragrance that celebrates new beginnings. Its sparkling bergamot top note introduces a captivatingly fresh middle note accord of freesia, honeysuckle and night blooming jasmine. Fresh oceanic musk and white cedar form a base note accord of subtle depth. This fragrance evokes dancing California sunlight, coastal air and more ethereal manifestations of nature’s beauty.” (About “Love”) “Love comes from within is an alluring tribute to both the passions that exist within all of us and the treasure that is the human heart. Its seductive clove top note introduces a sensuously sexy middle note of spicy carnation and rose, a flower long renowned for its aphrodisiac properties. The fragrance’s textured, warm base note accord of Tunisian Amber, French Vanilla, Clean Musk and Indian Sandalwood beckons others to draw near as it evolves on the skin. Love comes from within is a fragrance designed to inspire that priceless love of self that makes one irresistible to others.” (About “Peace”) “Peace comes from within is a clean, tranquil fragrance of gentle depth. Its bergamot top note, renowned for its ability to inspire mental clarity, rests upon a base note accord of fresh oceanic musk and meditative sandalwood. Peace comes from within is a perfume that is designed to allow the scent of its wearer’s skin to shine through. Evoking the subtle yet intoxicating fragrance of bare arms that have been caressed by seawater, it both captivates and induces a sense of calm.”

Toya’s Take: I’m not as much an expert on fragrances as I am on make-up, so I wasn’t really sure what to make of all the high-falutin’ language that came along with this fragrance trio. I do understand that fragrances have different notes and that what it smells like when you first apply it isn’t what it’s going to smell like later on, but that’s about the extent of my knowledge. Otherwise, I just know what I like. I pick fragrances based on how they make me feel – what image arises in my head when I wear them or if they change my mood for the better. So, when I got the chance to review these fragrances that are based upon one’s inner attributes, I thought they would be perfect for me.

Light comes from within is a wonderfully light, airy, flowery fragrance. It makes me feel soft and pretty and brings to mind a field of flowers. Actually, it smells a lot like Kuumba Made’s Pikaki Lei, which I wear whenever I want to feel feminine and dainty. I like it a lot. However, I really don’t like Love comes from within, which I tested next. It’s a quite heavy-handed, kind of masculine scent, in my opinion. It smells like the neo-hippies that I’ve known – like patchouli and sandalwood (which is one of the ingredients), like dudes with dreadlocks who burn incense and wear peace symbols and raggedy clothes. Blech! It didn’t evoke “love” to me at all, unless you’re thinking “free love”, which … gross. Thankfully, Peace comes from within is much better. Again, like Light it’s a very, well, light, fragrance which makes me think of sunshine and grass and the outdoors … in a good way.

Fall Product Review: Lulu Beauty Perfume in Starlet

What They Say: "Starlet is feminine magnetism bottled. Velvety white gardenias rest provacatively on a base note of clean, sensual musk to create a sultry fragrance that is both lingering and alluring."

Jen's Experience: I am always drawn to the scent of gardenia. It's the one flower in my yard I can't resist picking just so I can take in the fragrance. This perfume has more than just a hint of gardenia, it's the very essence of it. What's more, instead of the musk that they say is the base note, it almost smells to me to be on a base of honey. The bottle is tiny, but I love the roll-on applicator, which helps me apply it right where I want it. I find this to be the perfect casual fragrance. It's low key, and when I'm wearing it, I feel like the queen bee!

Fall Product Review: Badgley Mischka Eau de Parfum

What They Say: "Exclusive premier. Introducing the first parfum by legendary design house Badgley Mischka—a modern, elegant fragrance as sophisticated as their coveted fashions."

  • A spicy-floral fragrance with notes of jasmine, amber, patchouli, and sueded musks.
  • The linear glass bottle features clean, classic lines with a unique stopper.
  • 1.7 or 3.4 ounces.

Also, from Elle Magazine: Mark Badgley and James Mischka always said that when they did their first perfume, Badgley Mischka Eau de Parfum en Vaporisateur, their favorite flower, white peony, would be a part. The duo added cassis, make from black currants for "a mouthwatering quality that we loved," Badgley says, and patchouli for a "naughty factor".

Jen's Experience: When I first read about this fragrance in a magazine, I knew it was something that I wanted to try. I went to all my usual haunts -- Sephora, Saks Fifth Avenue, etc -- until finally I learned that Neiman Marcus is selling it exclusively until September 27th. So, sight unseen and scent unsmelled, I ordered it from their site. (Incidentally, I ordered it during their Beauty Event, and it came with one of the best Gift With Purchase bags I've ever gotten: a red patent bag filled with a perfect-for-my-purse-sized Marc Jacob's perfume as well as good sized samples of Estee Lauder, La Prairie, Orlane, Frederic Fekkai, Molton Brown, and Fresh products. I also got a miniature bottle of the Badgley Mischka perfume! Neiman, you may be my new favorite department store for beauty products.)

If someone told me to imagine what "perfume" smells like, I would imagine something very much like the scent of this perfume is like right after I spray it. A very traditional, classic sort of scent. After it mellows a bit, some of the other notes, the Jasmine in particular, become more noticable. This is a musky fragrance, so it's definitely heavier than the perfumes I am used to wearing in the spring and summer time, but it fits in well with my other Fall fragrances, Prada and Very Valentino. It's a fragrance that I think is more suitable for work or formal occasions than for play.

If you're looking for the hot new fragrance, this is it. It should be in other department stores on or around September 27th, so keep and eye out because this is definitely one you'll want to try.

Fall Product Review: Carol's Daughter Eau de Toilette in Green Tea

What They Say: “Green tea and green apple scented body spray.”

Toya’s Take: Well, with such a modest description of the product, how could it disappoint? It is exactly what it says it is – a green tea and green apple scented body spray. That said … I didn’t love it. I don’t quite know what I expected, but I’ve loved every other scent of Carol’s Daughter products that I’ve ever used. This one was just not me at all. It smelled quite woodsy, actually – like leaves, which I guess makes sense. It’s fresh and clean and outdoorsy. I think it’d be a good fragrance for a woman who’s in love with the outdoors and doesn’t think of herself as a girly girl. Unfortunately, that woman isn’t me.

Fragrance Review: Fresh Scents by Terri Perfume Oil in Breathe

freshscentsbreathe.jpgWhat They Say: "An exquisite combination of White Rain and Light Musk, this scent will take your breath away. This fragrance is invigorating and long lasting with a crisp, clean aroma that will have people stopping you in the streets. Perfect for day into evening."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: One of my new favorites, this is one of the most versatile fragrances I've tested in a long time. It's feminine but sexy, light but lingering. It seriously lasts and lasts for HOURS, and only gets better the longer you are wearing it.

I am a fan of the roller ball applicator because it's portable and because I like using oils straight onto the skin better than spraying whenever possible because of the concentration of fragrance, but if you want options, there's always the atomizer, body lotion, shower gel, body wash and more.

This is a wonderfully sophisticated yet delicate musk combination.

Retail Price: $38.00 (with other versions of the scent ranging from $20-48.00, available at freshscentsterri.com or go here to find a retail location near you or other online retailers)

Review: Armani Code for Women

armanicode.jpg
What They Say: "Seduce the senses with an intriguing orange flower note with fresh ginger accents and the caress of honey-sandalwood accord creating an unforgettable and captivating new encounter. A woman's mysterious code of seduction revealed."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This is definitely a WOMANLY fragrance. Nothing cutesy or tripping-among-the-daisies about it. That, of course, doesn't mean it isn't intriguing and wonderful, which in my opinion it is. And I'm actually surprised I'm saying that. When I first smelled it I was a little unsure about the forthrightness, the boldness of the scent. It's definitely more-suited for fall and winter because of its complexity and fullness.

Here's the thing with this fragrance: Don't spray more than one or two spritzes TOTAL on yourself. That's ALL you'll need. Personally, I'm not really in love with it for the first hour after I've applied it. It's quite spicy/peppery and a little strong. But after that, when the top notes wear off a bit, it turns into a really sultry, powdery spiciness which is easier on the senses. And at that point, I like it a lot.

This would be a great fragrance to spray once into your hair at the back of your neck and just let heat through the day with your body to give a hint of mystery. If you like fragrances that make a statement and feel powerful and womanly, this may be for you.

Retail Price: $52.50 (Armani online and select department stores)

Review: Masaki Matsushima Mintea fragrance

mintea.jpgWhat They Say: "Inspired by the art of refinement practiced in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, this outstanding combination of green tea, mint tea leaves, white flowers, and precious woods, plus Mat's signature crystal musk is as light as morning dew on mint leaves.

Notes:
Green Tea, Lemon, Mint Tea, Lily of the Valley, White Rose, Crystal Musk, Precious Woods.
Style:
Calming. Subtle. Light."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: How do I say this without copping out, guys? It smells like Mint...Tea! Argh, okay I can do better. It's really fresh and light, absolutely PERFECT for this hot weather when you don't want to go around with a super complex fragrance. Though that doesn't mean it isn't a complex formula, it just smells nice and simple. Light, airy, tangy-sweet with a touch of mint. Personally, I love it. It's truly different from anything I've ever used or tested out before.

Retail Price: $60.00 (NEW, and at Sephora only currently)

Review: Becker Eshaya (be) Eau de Parfum Fragrance Pen

beckereshaya.jpgWhat They Say: "As seen in April 2006 Allure Magazine...be eau de parfum pen...

With celebrity fans like Cameron Diaz, Christina Aguilera, Naomi Campbell and Calista Flockhart who all love this parfum, you'll want to know for yourself what the buzz is all about.

Long-time friends of the fashion world, Kristen Becker and John Eshaya have partnered to launch a fresh and modern designer frangrance line called "be." This is their first exclusive frangrance. A blend of Italian mandarin, pink peony, lily of the valley and rose damascena with a touch of sensual musk.

This fragrance pen is designed for quick and easy application at home, or when you are on the go. Roll on applicator sealed with a spring to eliminate leaking."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This is definitely a feminine fragrance, and very fitting for the sunny days of spring and summer. But you could also make this a signature scent all year long if you gravitate toward delicate florals. The roll-on fragrance pen makes application quick, easy and accurate and the fragrance lasts for hours and hours. It's not overwhelming at all and is very uplifting. I see this as a fragrance for a woman who is breezy and lighthearted who wants to celebrate her femininity. The pen holds 7.1 ml and is about the size a marker, so you get a very decent amount for the cost.

Retail Price: $45.00 (beautyintuition.com, who provided us our sample)

Banana Republic Perfume for Women

What They Say: "Banana Republic was created by Banana Republic in 1996 and is recommended for casual wear. This feminine scent possesses a blend of a fresh cut bouquet with fruity tones."

Jen's Experience: I love to spritz myself with a little of this whenever I'm in Banana Republic, so when I found it discounted at the outlet, I had to pick some up. Maybe it's a little too aged, but once I got it home, I found that I didn't like it as much as many of the other perfumes on my shelf. Something about it...it just didn't seem to smell as expensive as some of my favorites. It's not like it's Jean Nate by any means, but I find it more like a poor woman's Prada. Which means it's great for work, because why would I want to waste all my good Prada perfume on them?

My ramblings aside, it does have a nice clean floral scent that lasts several hours without being too overpowering. It also doesn't take up residence in my clothes. This is a great perfume for work or casual wear. A smaller version is great for your purse as well!

Retail Price: $46.00/3.3oz (Banana Republic stores)

Kaponga Nuts Cedar Ensemble

What They Say: "AVAILABLE IN US ONLY) A beautiful natural cedar box ideal as a gift for loved ones and friends. Contains one each of nuts crème de parfum No.13, nuts crème de parfum No.4 and, nuts crème de parfum No.5."

Jen's Experience: With packaging this adorable, does it really matter about the perfume? I mean, when I opened this up, I thought I should go ahead and stock up on these ensembles for gifts.

I really like the fact that they're solid. It makes it easy to apply, easy to get just the right amount on, and it may even last a little longer than the normal spray perfumes. A smaller size would be great for my handbag.

nuts crème de parfum No.13: "Small delicately colored alpine flowers with light fresh fragrances blended into a crisp and delightful crème de parfum."
This was by far by favorite of the three, but I almost always go for the floral perfumes.

nuts crème de parfum No.4: "Magnificent earth tones and forest fragrances in a lush crème de parfum with fresh notes of spicy wood."
This fragrance reminds me of those little Christmas tree air fresheners that hang on rear-view mirrors. I find it a little too masculine with the deep woods scent for my own taste. I actually think that it may do very well as a men's cologne.

nuts crème de parfum No.5: "A soothing and tranquil crème de parfum with seductive bouquets of wild flora, hints of vanilla and a dash of jasmine."
This one is still a little too musky for my taste (or maybe it's just the strong vanilla scent), but in combination with No. 13, it's quite nice.

Retail Price: $14.95 for each scent, or $49.95 for the ensemble. (Kaponga)

Estee Lauder Pure White Linen

What They Say: "The fragrance to live in all year long.

Fresh. Luminous. Pure.

A surprise of red tulips and rosebloom. Snow-white flowers, sparkling raspberry.

Pure White Linen steals you away to the perfect summer day. Like a stroll in a flowering garden, it lifts your mood and renews your spirit.

Pure White Linen is a modern interpretation of the classic White Linen theme, offering a feeling of fresh greens and just-opened florals.

Fragrance Type: Fruity Floral

Top Notes: Succulent Grapefruit and Italian Mandarin blend with Iced Rose Tea for pure luminosity. Luscious Raspberry, Pear and green Granny Smith Apple provide a natural lively fruitiness. Dewy Greens, blooming Lilies and White Freesia portray an aura of delicate wild flowers. Soft spicy accents of White Ginger and Cardamom accentuate the crispness.

Middle Notes: The signature core of whimsical Red Tulips is surrounded by a velvety array of Rose Absolute, Wild Honeysuckle, Gardenia Petals and a touch of Tuberose. Luxurious Jasmine, Soft Iris and Osmanthus add sophistication to the floral heart.

Dry Down: White Cedarwood and Patchouli give a seductive warmth to the background. White Heliotropine envelops the woods with smooth sensuality and femininity."

Jen's Experience: When I first received this perfume, I thought it might be too mature for me, like something my mother would enjoy. But then I wore it to work for the first time and fell in love with it. Although they describe many layers of notes, I think of this scent as uncomplicated and undeniably feminine. It wears for a very long time, 6-8 hours easily, without having to overapply in the AM. A traditional scent that is great for formal and work use, this would be a good choice for someone looking for a classic summertime floral fragrance.

Retail Price: $35.00/1 oz. (Estee Lauder)

Review: Miss Dior Cherie

missdior.gifWhat They Say: "A new interpretation of the original Miss Dior fragrance, Miss Dior Cherie combines pure couture spirit with the audacity of youthful, playful notes for a fresh approach to timeless classic. Notes of chic, green tangerine, violette, and pink jasmine mingle with soft patchouli, musk, and delectably sweet strawberry leaves and caramelized popcorn for a delicious scent that's truly irresistible.

Notes: Green Tangerine, Violette, Pink Jasmine, Patchouli, Crystalline Musk, Strawberry Leaves, Caramelized Popcorn, Strawberry Sorbet.
Style: Pure. Precious. Modern."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: For all the notes described above, this scent really doesn't smell as complicated as it sounds. Somehow, the combination just WORKS. This has become one of those fragrances that my husband always notices and acknowledges with an "Mmm...what's that? Is that the new stuff?" (which is about as specific as he can get with perfumes). Feminine yet not too girly, this is something you may want to sample as you breeze by the fragrance counter.

Review: Vanille Noire du Mexique by La Maison de la Vanille

vanille.pngWhat They Say: "Elegant and refined, this powdery fragrance has sparkling top notes of bergamot soothed with the richness of rose, jasmine, iris, and patchouli.

Notes:
Bergamot, Rose, Jasmine, Vanilla, Iris, Opoponax, Patchouli.
Style:
Mysterious. Refined. Seductive."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I've been reticent of vanilla for much of the past few years. I mean, I'm a fan generally, but something about that whole drugstore variety of pungent and overly-powerful vanilla that swept some of the female population a while ago just turned me off for a while. I was meandering through Sephora the other week, though, sampling some fragrances when I came across the line from La Maison de la Vanille. Uh-oh. I was worried. I wanted to try them out, but I've been let down by vanilla-laden fragrances before.

Vanille Noire du Mexique somehow appealed to me so much that I had to go ahead and get it. I think it's the way the vanilla is complicated nicely with some of the other notes. It's a warmed-up vanilla - not too sweet, a tad bit spicy and powdery. You don't need much (a little goes a long way), but the bottle is a nice size (100 ml) also, so this should last you a long while.

Retail Price: $35.00 (sephora.com - sorry UK readers, I tried VERY hard to find a place for you to purchase nearby!)

Tiramani by Shelley Kyle

tiramani.jpgWhat They Say: "Tiramani from Shelley Kyle-floral bouquet of wild jasmine enhanced by orange, fresh citrus on a background of musk all wrapped in exquisite Italian paper. Formulated to leave your skin soft, clean and beautifully scented throughout the day. Fresh, feminine and very romantic packaging really sets Shelley's products apart. All items are handpackaged and beautifully accented with such details as gold inscribed labels, ribbons, silk fabric and floral embossed paper. Perfect for gift giving, guest bathrooms or a pampered gift for yourself."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: Think along the fragrance note lines of Estee Lauder's Pleasures, but then think much less concentrated and powerful, but instead much lighter, prettier and more wearable for any woman. It develops very nicely after sitting on the skin a while, as well.

Demeter Black Russion Fragrance

What They Say: "Inspired by one of Demeter's favorite cocktail's this sharp and sexy combination of coffee liquor and vodka is the personification of night itself."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I love the fact that Demeter has such unusual and distinctive scents. This one is just how I like it - sweet (but not too sweet) with a bit of a kick. It's a perfect any-day scent if you enjoy slightly sweet and mysterious fragrances. The only downside? It doesn't quite have the staying power to last from day to night, but should last an entire work-day (or a whole evening out, which could be more fun!).

Bulgari Eau Parfumee White Tea

What They Say: "Both men and women can wear this delicate, soothing white tea scent with white pepper accents, day or evening. White Tea, the principal ingredient, has been used in China as an elixir of youth because of its antioxidant and revitalizing properties. Cultivated only a few times per year, this rare essence imparts an overall sense of well being.

Notes:
Artemisia Leaves, Ambrette, White Pepper, White Tea, Musk, Woody Amber.
Style:
Reassuring. Enveloping. Soothing."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: There's something incredibly unique about this fragrance. It's not spicy or floral, not sweet or overly musky. It's like an uplifted version of musk, with something fresh and alluring added to it. I have been a big fan of Bulgari Omnia for a while, and this scent - though incredibly different - is just as intriguing.

NEW! Tarte aux Myrtilles by Laurence Dumont

What They Say: "A daring combination of elegant and fun, fruity notes, this infinitely feminine blend is a refreshing departure from the classic oriental fragrance.

Notes: Lemon, Blueberry, Caramel, Violet, Vanilla, Butter.
Style: Fresh. Feminie. Delicious."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow:
I am a fragrance junkie, I admit it. I definitely don't NEED any more perfume, but OH MY GOSH perfume is so much fun! I can't. help. myself.

So anyway, while I am generally a fan of sweet notes, this one may even be too sweet for me! That's saying a lot, really. Mostly it's at the first spray. Once it's been sitting on your skin for a little while it grows more complex, but I have to say that the dominant scent I smell here is the blueberry. Which, hey, is great on pancakes and all (mmmm...pancakes), but it is admittedly a little strong here at first. It's overall kind of tart. I like it, but can see how another person with a preference for something oriental or spicy wouldn't be a huge fan. I am looking forward to trying out the Vanille Chocolat or the Vanille Orientale, which definitely sound right up my alley.

Retail Price: $22.00 (sephora.com)

Prada Perfume

What They Say: "Miuccia Prada is the driving, creative force behind Prada’s success. Like her creations she defies the boundaries of definition. One of the most remarkable fashion brands in the world, Prada is constantly surprising their loyal clientele with visionary designs and revolutionary concepts. The magic of Prada is in the details – ever present in everything they do.

Now, Prada brings its unique fusion of tradition and innovation to the world of fragrance, reinventing the ancient art of perfumery by creating a fragrance of yesterday and tomorrow, a scent inspired by the past, that embodies the future."

Jen's Experience: In the fall, when the days start getting shorter and the air becomes crisp, I pull out all my fall clothes: the brown trenchcoat, wool skirts, the cashmere sweaters. I also change my fragrance wardrobe.

While the gardenia-infused scents are perfect for spring and summer, in thefal, I like to move to something a little heavier. A little spicier. A scent that I want to wrap around me on a chilly day.

I fall in love with a lot of fragrances when I smell the samples in fashion magazines, but this one really stayed with me. And it's the perfect scent for fall. It's a very complex scent. It seems at first to be very spicy, musky, almost masculine. Then, the slightest hint of floral follows and brightens the scent.

It's very long lasting, and one or two spritzes is just enough without being overpowering. I went to the cosmetic counter expecting to buy just a bottle, but left with the Holiday box set, which also includes shower gel and body moisturizer. Perfect if you like to layer your scents.

If your looking for a sophisticated scent to complement your fall wardrobe, this one is truly a find.

Retail Price: $100/Holiday Box Set (Sephora)

Michael Kors Island

What They Say: "The Ultimate Getaway. The New Fragrance for Women.

A chic and relaxed attitude to last all year long. A sparkling, lush, and radiant fragrance of humid florals and tropical waters.

Notes:
Kauai Waterfalls, Oxygenated Water, Chinese Kiwi, Hydroponic Honeysuckle, Parrot Tulip, Champaca Flowers, Ginger Lilies, Bulgarian Rose, Stephanotis, White Bark Accord, Galapagos Driftwood.
Style:
Sparkling. Lush. Radiant. "

Jen's Experience:  This perfume was not at all what I expected.  I sampled Michael Kors Island by using the tester in magazines (NEVER a good idea by the way), and I thought it was similar to the Michael by Michael Kors perfume that has been on the market for a few years.  This smelled a little more floral, which I like.  So it seemed perfect.  I looked everywhere in town and no one carried it, making it impossible to get a real test, so I ended up ordering it from Sephora.  Turns out, this scent is nothing at all like Michael, and instead it is very heavy and floral.  Not to say this is a bad perfume at all.  It's actually one I would probably pick out -- for winter.  I think I will stick to some of my old favorites for the rest of the summer and pick this one back up later in the year, when it is cooler and heavier scents are more in season.

Retail Price: $60 (Sephora)

Creative Scentualizations Perfect Vanilla - Pure Oil

What They Say: "Warm, mouthwatering and inviting
Vanilla is a scent that, for many, evokes a sense of home and comfort. Due to its popularity in perfumery, our challenge was to create a vanilla fragrance that is unique. This was achieved through the use of such unusual complementary notes as blood orange and tobacco. Perfect Vanilla is enjoyed by both men and women."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: After a description like that, it's no wonder I put this on my list for Christmas one year and got it as a gift from my mom! As stated above, I have the pure oil version of this fragrance, but it also comes in eau de parfum, body lotion, bath gel, etc. In fact, Creative Scentualizations has an impressive lineup of scent families to try out. While I can't speak to the credit of all of them, I CAN tell you that this is one of my absolute favorite fragrances. I like the oil form, as it stays all day and just gets better and better as my skin warms it up. I always like to put a little in my hair at the nape of my neck, too, which is a great place to add a bit of fragrance in case you don't already. I love it so much that I get sad when I use it because it's that much closer to being empty.

Retail Price: $36.00 (creativescent.com - other products range from $12 up)

Dessert Treats Candy Perfume

I admit it.  I am a candy freak.  I love Skittles at the movie theater and SweeTarts for road trips, and cotton candy at the amusement park.   So I was thrilled to try out Dessert Treats' Candy Fragrance.

"Tempting and playful, the perfect combination of sugar and spice.  Inviting for anyone who wants to move a little closer."

Well, let me tell you, this is far different from any scent I've ever tried.   It really smells like candy.  In fact, I think it smells exactly like cotton candy.  I catch whiffs of it throughout the day and get cravings for something sugary.  I have even caught myself chewing on my hair (!) because I can taste the candy on it.  (And amazingly, it doesn't taste medicinal at all.  Very yummy.)  It really smells delicious.   I don't become immune to the smell minutes after I leave the house; it sticks with me throughout the day.

If the smell of cotton candy makes you smile, I think you'll like this as a daytime work or shopping perfume.   It makes me happy all day.  Now if only I could just stop licking my hair....

Price:  $27.00 (Ulta)

Bonne Bell Skin Musk Oil

What They Say:
* A touch is all it takes to turn on the romance.
* Skin Musk is clean, fresh and sexy!
* Let the soft aroma of florals, sandalwood and musk embrace you.
* We do not test on animals.

Melissa's DeLush Downlow:
Don't dismiss this little drugstore find!!! Sarah Jessica Parker has said on more than one occasion that this has been her longtime signature scent (don't tell, but after reading that so many times, that's why I first got it! - I had to know for myself). I personally adore the way this wears on my skin. Because it is a musk, it isn't very flowery or sweet like most fragrances (a big bonus if you want to get away from that once in a while), and being an oil it has no alchohol (which is good for people like my own mom who get headaches with fragrances that contain alcohol).

If you like musk scents or other natural oil fragrances at all, give this a try. It brings you back to an innocent time in your life, and is the perfect feel for the upcoming summer weather. It's something I'll always make sure I have stocked up in MY cabinet!

Retail Price: $8.99 (walgreens.com and various drugstores)

CLEAN Perfume

From Sephora: "The ideal fragrance option for those that prefer that just-out-of-the-shower fresh smell. Each mist begins with a fresh blast of freshness and dries down to a soft, squeaky-clean finish.

Clean Eau de Parfum, the signature scent, is reminiscent of pure soap. It combines the fragrance notes of litsea cubeba, orange, sweet lime, pink grapefruit, passion lily, rose geranium, and white musk."

Jen's Experience:  While I like to wear a scent every day, I don't like to wear anything too overpowering to work.   When I received a sample of CLEAN, I was thrilled, because it smells great, but it doesn't knock you down with floweriness.  It just makes you smell...clean.  It reminds me of how my clothes smell when they've just been washed.  I absolutely love it.  I wear it to work on a daily basis, and I often even wear it out on the town.  I get more compliments on this fragrance than any of my others.  I just wish it lasted a little longer -- it lasts me about 4 to 5 hours with 3 sprays, not quite through the entire work day but long enough to make a great first impression in all my morning meetings!

Retail Price: $76.00/2.14 oz (www.cleanperfume.com)

Marc Jacobs Perfume

From the Sephora Website:

Marc Jacobs interprets Gardenia. It's classic, luxurious, and comfortingly feminine. The scent is both sensuous and uncomplicated, complementing the wearer without overwhelming her.

Notes:
Gardenia, Wild Muguet, Skin Musk, Cedar, Ginger.
Style:
A blend that is lush and watery at once.

Jen's Experience:  Now that spring has sprung, I just had to tell you about my favorite spring fragrance, which just happens to be my absolute favorite of my seasonal perfumes.   I love gardenias, and when they're in bloom, I just have to pick off a bud so that I can carry it around and smell it.  Somehow it's intoxicatingly rich and yet clean smelling at the same time.   Marc Jacobs certainly captures the essence in his perfume.   I believe this perfume deserves to become a classic; it definitely gets a permanent position on my bathroom counter.  And don't forget the other products in the collection: the body lotion has a nice shimmer to it and the hair shine will keep your hair smelling great all day long.

Retail Price: $65.00/1.7 oz Eau de Parfum Spray

FCUK Her

What They Say: "FCUK for her is modern, provocative and sexy. Top notes include bergamot, muguet and water iris. Middle notes include barringtonia flower from Madasgascar, peony, jasmine and violet. Bottom notes include golden amber musk, cedarwood and sandalwood."

Jen's Experience:  I received this fragrance as a gift and since then I haven't been able to tear myself away from it.  It is great for work because it is slightly flowery but not overpowering.  It smells clean and fun, so it's also great for an evening out with the girls, but nice enough even to wear out on a date.  It is kind of a light perfume, so I would be more likely to wear this as a spring or summer perfume, but even this winter I've barely gone a day without it.  My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to last all day.  I would like to find a purse spray so that I can freshen up throughout the day.

Retail Price: $49.00

Bulgari Omnia

What They Say: "OMNIA is a tribute to the tradition of the great oriental perfumes, re-interpreted for the world of today. A fragrance destined to re-awaken the senses to a new dimension of pleasure in an unending celebration of tastes, scents and colours." Sephora.com says-
Notes:
Mandarin, Saffron, Masala Tea, and White Chocolate.
Style:
Sexy. Warm. Delicious.

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I LOVE this fragrance. It's different from those I usually choose, but something about it intoxicates me. I would describe it as a very sexy, slightly sweet, yet almost musky scent with amazing staying power. Definitely HOT for a night out, too. I love the combination - it's very unique and everyone will ask what you're wearing.

User Tips: A little goes a long way, this scent is quite concentrated. So don't overspray.

Lancome Miracle So Magic! Fragrance

What They Say: "Vivacious. Fun. Spirited. Life is a magical experience full of wonder and excitement. Come play with a magical bouquet of Narcissus, Clover and Wild Rose. The spirit and sparkle of this fragrance will awaken your senses and make your spirits soar."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This floral fragrance strikes me as something a classic woman would wear when she wants to feel happy and carefree. It's almost like a field of wildflowers, and as the scent wore through the day the notes combined into a sort of lily-of-the-valley smell. A long-wearing perfume for those that enjoy florals.

Clinique Simply

What They Say: "A sheer, vibrant fragrance that surrounds you with unexpected warmth, surprising depth. With the velvety impression of wet, white flower petals, the creamy, comfort of soymilk and the intimacy of soy nut and smoked woods. A nice place to be."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: A bit flowery for me (which toned down a bit after wearing for a while), but my husband liked it. It had definite staying power, though, and improved as it wore throughout the day.

Retail Price: $39.50 - $53.50 (clinique.com)

Estee Lauder Beyond Paradise

What They Say: "The new fantasy in fragrance.

It's an intoxication of the senses...rare, radiant, intriguing.

Estée Lauder Beyond Paradise transports you to a perfect world of optimism and wonder. Unfolds on your skin with a fascinating blend of tropical wetness, zesty freshness and bursting floralcy. "

Jen's Experience:  This product got rave reviews from multiple women's magazines, so I was eager to try it.   When I tried it on, I was pleased that it had a clean scent that was not overpowering.  It reminds me of the way my hair smells when I use a floral shampoo.  This would not be a perfume I would consider wearing on a date, but for a daytime perfume for work, I think it would be a nice selection.  One downside, it does not seem to last for more than a few hours.

Philosopy - Falling In Love Fragrance

What They Say: "Falling in love fragrance was created for one reason and one reason only... to make a woman feel and smell absolutely, positively, sexy. Falling in love is worn by women and loved by men. This sensual scent is best described as a creative blend of sweet, delectable vanilla top notes, graceful floral middle notes, and musky blackberry bottom notes."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This yummy, delicate scent is light enough for anytime wear, and I love the way the notes blend on my skin after applying. However, I do wish it lasted a bit longer. Don't try this if you steer away from anything remotely sweet. If you try it? Use it for a day out. Or even better? A night in...

Retail Price: $35.00 (Philosophy)

DKNY Be Delicious

What They Say: "A modern feast for the senses. Served in a sleek metal and glass apple bottle, this juicy fragrance combines the scent of apple with a sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and sensual woods. Like the city that inspired it, Be Delicious celebrates individuality with refreshing spirit.

Notes:
American Apple, Cucumber, Grapefruit, Candid Magnolia, Tuberose, White Muguet, Rose, Violet, Sandalwood, Tender Skin Accord, Blonde Woods, White Amber.
Style:
Free-spirited. Refreshing. Unique. "

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: This scent is definitely strong, so don't go for it if you prefer something light and airy. It lasted throughout the day for me. There is a definite predominant green apple scent. I'd classify this as a flirty, fun, daytime fragrance.

Retail Price: $48-62 (sephora.com)

The Body Shop Invent Your Scent Collection Pack

What They Say: "Let them invent their scent with our nine fragrances in pretty glass vials. Comes with a leaflet to tempt and guide."

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I got this AMAZING gift set at Christmas, I have to say, it's one of my favorite new things to play around with. I haven't found one that I don't like yet, and love the natural, clean notes of each very different scent. If you like to be original and love fresh fragrances, you can have a lot of fun with this!

User Tips: I like to wear them alone as well as layer them. And you don't need to spray much to get a nice lasting effect.

Hanae Mori

P0974_heroWhat They Say: "Hanae Mori, the great lady of Japanese fashion and Parisian haute couture, introduced this fragrance in 1996 and the subtle composition of scents make it unlike any other.

The fragrance is a rare blend of berries and flowers, with a distinctive tone of strawberries and almond, giving an impression of vanilla. The bottle's top is distinctly made from glass, a first for any fragrance. The top represents the beauty and delicate shape of a butterfly with folded wings.

Melissa's DeLush Downlow: I consider this one of my classic fragrances. It wears beautifully and smells especially good in your hair (one of my favorite spots for perfume). It's not too heavy, and is something I love to wear all year long, a special favorite in the early spring.

$58-80 (sephora.com)

Very Valentino

Very_valentino Described As: "Top notes of bergamot, mandarin, blackcurrant, magnolia and lily of the valley. The middle is tinged with delicate notes of jasmine, rose de Mai and sheer woods."

My DeLush Experience: I change my perfumes with the season, and in the winter, I like a more robust, sensual scent.  Something luxurious that reminds me of sitting in front of a warm fire after an early nightfall.   Very Valentino fits the bill, and is a terrific perfume for winter formal occasions or a romantic dinner in a candlelit restaurant.  I also like the fact that it not as well known and somewhat difficult to find, so your office mates won't show up wearing the same fragrance.

Tips:  Two sprays is enough.  It is quite strong at first so take care not to overdo it.  You may need a purse spray for daily use; I find that it mostly wears off in about 6 hours.
